The Nasarawa State House of Assembly has expressed grave concern over the alarming rise in kidnapping incidents across various communities in the state, calling for urgent and coordinated action to address the menace.
During a plenary session held in Lafia, the state capital, the Assembly directed the chairmen of all 13 Local Government Areas to work closely with traditional rulers and security agencies to organize a security summit aimed at finding lasting solutions to the escalating problem.
The resolution came after a motion was brought to the floor by the Deputy Speaker, Muhammad Adamu Oyanki, who highlighted the deteriorating security situation in his constituency and other parts of the state.
The Speaker of the House, Danladi Jatau, while reading the resolution, commended the Deputy Speaker for raising the issue and praised the contributions of other members during the deliberation.
He acknowledged the efforts of the Nasarawa State Governor, Abdullahi Sule, and the security agencies in combating insecurity but stressed the need for more robust and strategic measures to curb the rising cases of kidnapping.
“The House is deeply concerned about the increasing rate of kidnapping in the state. We commend His Excellency, Engr. A. A. Sule, and the security agencies for their ongoing efforts, but it is clear that more needs to be done.
The Kidnapping Law passed by this Assembly must be strictly enforced, and anyone found violating it should face the full weight of the law,” Jatau stated.
The Speaker further directed that all local government chairmen, in collaboration with traditional rulers and security agencies, convene a security summit within the next two weeks to develop comprehensive strategies to tackle the kidnapping crisis.
Jatau also urged the people of Nasarawa State to cooperate with security agents by providing useful information that could help in curtailing criminal activities in their communities.
Earlier, Deputy Speaker Muhammad Adamu Oyanki had raised alarm over the rampant kidnappings in his constituency, describing the situation as a “serious problem” that requires immediate intervention.
“Kidnapping has become a daily occurrence in my constituency. People are living in fear as abductions happen both day and night. We must act swiftly to protect the lives of our people,” Oyanki pleaded.
Supporting the motion, several members of the Assembly, including Luka Iliya Zhekaba, Suleiman Yakubu Azara, Jacob Ajegana, and others, echoed the need for enhanced security measures.
They emphasized that residents in their constituencies no longer felt safe, with many unable to sleep peacefully due to the constant threat of kidnapping.
The lawmakers called on security agencies to adopt modern technology in their operations to more effectively combat kidnapping and other criminal activities in the state.
