Nigerian organised labour has affirmed its resolve to initiate an indefinite nationwide strike, defying eleventh-hour interventions by the National Assembly aimed at forestalling the impending industrial action.
Despite intense negotiations held at the National Assembly Complex between the leadership of the Senate, House of Representatives, and representatives of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC), the labour leaders remained resolute in their decision to proceed with the strike, citing unmet demands regarding the national minimum wage and electricity tariff hike.
The emergency meeting, spearheaded by Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Speaker of the House of Representatives, Abbas Tajudeen, sought to persuade organised labour to suspend the strike and resume negotiations with the government.
However, the labour representatives reiterated their commitment to the planned action, emphasizing the urgency of addressing the grievances of Nigerian workers.
In a joint statement issued by NLC President Comrade Joe Ajaero and TUC President Comrade Festus Osifo, the labour leaders expressed disappointment at the government’s perceived lack of seriousness in addressing their concerns.
They highlighted the absence of key government officials with the authority to negotiate and commit to outcomes during previous meetings, signaling a disregard for the demands of Nigerian workers.
Despite previous ultimatums and protests, the government’s response fell short of addressing the fundamental issues raised by organised labour, prompting the decision to proceed with the strike action.
With the strike scheduled to commence at midnight on June 3, 2024, labour leaders instructed members across states and affiliate unions to mobilise effectively, ensuring a total shutdown of activities in support of their demands.
While acknowledging the appeal made by the National Assembly leadership to reconsider the strike, the labour representatives affirmed that there was no turning back on their decision to press for meaningful change.
As tensions escalate between Nigerian organised labour and the government, the stage is set for a showdown that could have far-reaching implications for the country’s economy and social stability.
With both sides entrenched in their positions, the fate of millions of workers hangs in the balance as the nation braces for the impact of an indefinite nationwide strike.
