Power supply was restored in Abuja and parts of Lagos on Wednesday evening after Nigeria’s national grid collapsed earlier in the day, throwing several cities across the country into darkness.
The collapse, which occurred around 11:30 am, disrupted electricity supply to multiple distribution companies (DisCos), including those serving Port Harcourt, Jos, Yola, and other regions that, as of press time, were still without power.
The Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) confirmed the incident in a public notice on its official handle, attributing the blackout to a “loss of supply from the national grid at 11:23 am.”
The company assured customers that efforts were underway to restore electricity. “Rest assured, we are working closely with the relevant stakeholders to ensure power is restored once the grid is stabilised,” AEDC said.
By Wednesday afternoon, the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) announced that gradual restoration had begun, with 495 megawatts distributed to some DisCos.
A breakdown showed that Abuja Disco received 150MW, Eko and Ikeja DisCos got 80MW each, Ibadan 50MW, Benin and Enugu 40MW each, Kano 35MW, and Kaduna 25MW.
However, supply to Port Harcourt, Jos, and Yola DisCos remained at zero, leaving millions of homes and businesses stranded.
The latest collapse adds to the growing concerns about Nigeria’s fragile power infrastructure, which has suffered multiple grid failures in recent years despite ongoing reforms in the energy sector.
