The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has suspended the licenses of a ValueJet pilot and co-pilot for violating aviation safety procedures at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the NCAA said the crew embarked on takeoff procedures from the designated bay without obtaining mandatory pre-departure clearance, a move described by the authority as “reckless and dangerous.”
According to Michael Achimugu, Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection at NCAA, the incident occurred on Tuesday, August 5, 2025, at the domestic wing of the Abuja airport.
“Preliminary findings indicate that Captain Oluranti Ogoyi initiated departure without proper clearance, thereby breaching civil aviation regulations and international safety standards,” Achimugu stated.
The authority said the action endangered the safety of ground staff, airport workers, and passengers, prompting swift disciplinary measures.
The co-pilot, First Officer Ivan Oloba, was also suspended for his role in the incident.
Both licences have been withdrawn with immediate effect, pending the conclusion of a comprehensive investigation.
“The Authority will not tolerate any conduct that compromises safety and will continue to enforce strict compliance with aviation standards,” the statement added.
This latest action reinforces NCAA’s zero-tolerance approach to safety violations, following a recent grounding of Rano Air over technical faults.
The NCAA urged all operators to ensure strict adherence to all safety protocols as part of its continued efforts to maintain a secure aviation environment in Nigeria.
