The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has reiterated its commitment to bridging the digital divide in underserved communities, with a special focus on Plateau State.
This was disclosed by Ms. Rimini Makama, NCC’s Executive Commissioner for Stakeholder Management, during a courtesy visit to Gov. Caleb Mutfwang at the Government House, Jos, on Monday.
Speaking on behalf of the Commission, Ms. Makama described Plateau as a “strategic and indispensable partner” in Nigeria’s national broadband agenda, citing the state’s strong educational institutions, vibrant innovation hubs, youthful population, and policies supportive of digital transformation.
“We recognize Plateau State not just ceremonially, but strategically,” she said. “Many rural local government areas remain disconnected from the digital economy. Bridging that divide is a shared responsibility, and the NCC is ready to play its part.”
The visit marks the beginning of discussions aimed at leveraging NCC’s Universal Service Provision Fund to expand broadband coverage across the state’s underserved communities.
Gov. Mutfwang lauded the Commission’s recognition of Plateau’s digital potential, highlighting ongoing initiatives including an innovation hub at Plateau State Polytechnic, developed in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), and a Memorandum of Understanding with Solitran to accelerate statewide broadband deployment.
The governor also announced plans for a Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) initiative that will provide jobs for 500 youths in Jos, emphasizing the need to move from policy pronouncements to practical, high-impact digital projects, particularly in areas such as artificial intelligence and e-commerce.
Mutfwang stressed that modernizing administrative systems within the state civil service remains critical to unlocking the full potential of digital innovation and improving governance.
With these developments, Plateau State is positioning itself as a leading hub for technology-driven growth in Nigeria, signaling strong public-private collaboration to harness digital
