The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) has announced the dismissal of three personnel, including a Controller of Corrections, following a thorough review of misconduct cases.

This was  disclosed in a statement by NCoS spokesperson Abubakar Umar on Thursday.

PLATFORM TIMES gathered that the  Civil Defence, Correctional, Fire, and Immigration Services Board conducted the review, addressing a range of offences such as gross negligence of duty, absence without leave, trafficking in illicit items, general inefficiency, and falsification of results among its personnel.

“The Nigerian Correctional Service, in a bid to maintain a high standard of discipline and professionalism, has reviewed various cases of unprofessional conducts, wrongdoings, improper behaviours and serious misconducts of erring personnel, resulting in the dismissal of three personnel, including a Controller of Corrections, for various misconducts such as gross negligence of duty, absence without leave, trafficking in illicit items, general inefficiency, falsification of results, etc.,” Umar stated.

Alongside the dismissals, the board also reinstated one suspended officer and imposed mandatory retirement on three others, while six personnel faced demotion and 13 received warnings.

This comprehensive disciplinary action aligns with the zero-tolerance policy championed by Controller-General of Corrections Haliru Nababa, aimed at purging the service of unscrupulous elements and reinforcing operational excellence.

The NCoS emphasised its unwavering commitment to securing custodial and non-custodial facilities, pledging adherence to international best practices in correctional management.

This latest development follows similar measures taken earlier this year when two officers were dismissed and 35 others disciplined for various infractions.
