The Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation (NDIC) has attributed the delay in reimbursing some depositors of the defunct Heritage Bank to their failure to provide alternate bank accounts.
The Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of NDIC, Bello Hassan, disclosed this during the opening of a three-day retreat for senior management and executive staff held in Kano on Friday.
According to him, the corporation had utilized the Bank Verification Numbers (BVN) of the affected depositors to locate their alternate accounts but was unable to find such accounts in the banking system.
“Depositors of the defunct Heritage Bank have not been reimbursed largely because we don’t have their alternate bank accounts. We used their BVN but could not locate any alternative account in the system,” Hassan stated.
He urged the affected depositors to visit any NDIC zonal office for verification, identification, and eventual reimbursement.
“I am using this opportunity to appeal to them to reach out to our zonal offices for the necessary processes to be completed,” he added.
Hassan also highlighted the importance of the retreat, organized in collaboration with the Bureau of Public Procurement (BPP), as a platform to enhance transparency, accountability, and efficiency in the corporation’s procurement processes.
“This workshop, with the BPP as our technical partner, aims to strengthen NDIC’s procurement strategies, ensuring operational resilience and aligning with our vision of being one of the best deposit insurers globally,” Hassan explained.
He noted that the retreat builds on resolutions from the 2023 Executive Procurement Retreat held in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, which emphasized continuous training to enhance capacity among NDIC staff involved in procurement.
The Director-General of the BPP, Dr. Adebowale Adedokun, revealed during the event that the agency had commenced investigations into violations of procurement processes by certain organizations.
“Procurement is a globally driven public sector system, and organizations must adhere to established procedures when spending government funds,” Adedokun stated.
He emphasized that the workshop seeks to address challenges and provide tailored solutions for improved compliance and efficiency.
