The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has revealed that it arrested 77,792 drug offenders and confiscated 14,847 kilograms of illicit drugs across Nigeria over the past five years, the agency’s Chairman, Retired Brigadier General Buba Marwa, has disclosed.
Marwa made the announcement on Tuesday during an award and commendation ceremony for NDLEA personnel at the agency’s headquarters in Abuja, describing the seizures as a “major blow” to local and international drug trafficking networks.
He said the arrests included 128 notorious drug barons, reflecting the scale of the agency’s nationwide operations.
“It is heartwarming to note that in the last five years, we recorded significant operational successes, including the arrest of 77,792 drug offenders, among whom were 128 identified drug barons who were central to major trafficking networks,” Marwa said.
He added that the NDLEA secured 14,225 convictions in the period, reinforcing the consequences of drug-related offences. “We seized a total of 14,847 kilograms of assorted illicit drugs, thereby disrupting both local and transnational supply chains.
In further strengthening the criminal justice response, we successfully prosecuted and secured convictions against 14,225 offenders, sending a clear warning to traffickers,” he said.
Beyond enforcement, Marwa highlighted the agency’s efforts in drug demand reduction, noting that 32,442 Nigerians have benefited from counselling, treatment, and rehabilitation programs nationwide.
The NDLEA also conducted 13,735 sensitisation campaigns under its War Against Drug Abuse initiative, targeting schools, markets, workplaces, motor parks, places of worship, and communities.
Marwa reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to bringing drug barons to justice, intercepting traffickers, and eliminating illicit drugs from Nigerian streets.
“Our fight against drugs is far from over. We will continue to strengthen our operations to rid our society of the menace of substance abuse,” he said.
