In a sweeping crackdown on drug trafficking, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has apprehended multiple suspects, including a traditional leader in Osun State, a Chadian national, and a youth corps member.

This development was disclosed in a statement by Femi Babafemi, NDLEA’s Director of Media & Advocacy, on Sunday.

The head of the Akarabata community in Ile-Ife, Osun State, Ba’ale Ige Babatunde, was arrested on Friday, with fresh cannabis plants weighing 5kg.

“In Osun State, the head of Akarabata community in Ile-Ife, Ba’ale Ige Babatunde, 50, was on Friday, 5th July arrested with fresh cannabis plants that weighed 5kg,” the statement read.

“The NDLEA’s operations extended beyond Osun State, capturing a youth corps member in Kano.

“On Wednesday, July 3, Yusuf Abdulrahman, 25, was apprehended at the Corpers’ Lodge in the Sumaila area of Kano city.

“ He was found in possession of 1.250kg of Loud, a potent strain of cannabis.”

In another significant bust, NDLEA operatives raided Ikota forest in Ifedore LGA, Ondo State, arresting two suspects, Monday Ali, 49, and Jimoh Alewi, 37.

The raid, which culminated on Monday, July 1, led to the destruction of 42,500kg of cannabis on 17 hectares of farmland.

Additionally, 73.5kg of the substance was recovered for prosecution purposes.

Benue State also witnessed NDLEA’s rigorous enforcement efforts.

On Thursday, July 4, operatives intercepted a consignment of 350 grams of cocaine at a checkpoint along Enugu Road, Otukpo.

The drug was concealed in an MP3 speaker sent as a waybill parcel. A follow-up operation at Flight motor park in Otukpo led to the arrest of the parcel’s owner, 25-year-old Odeh Anthony.

The Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, saw the arrest of two individuals, Sanusi Mamman, 28, and Usaini Ibrahim, 20, on Saturday, July 6.

They were caught with 1,132 bottles of codeine syrup, 13,540 pills of tramadol, 50,000 pills of diazepam, and 59 pills of rophynol.

The suspects claimed to have transported the opioids from Onitsha, Anambra State.

Further north, NDLEA operatives on a stop-and-search operation along Ngurore-Yola Road in Adamawa State on Wednesday, July 3, arrested Yves Ahmat Gali, a Chadian national.

He was travelling in a commercial bus from Kano to Yola and was found with a loudspeaker used to conceal 20 compressed blocks and nine plastic containers of Loud, weighing 5.200kg.
