The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has revealed its operational achievements in 2024, including the arrest of over 18,500 suspected drug traffickers and the seizure of 2.6 million kilograms of illicit drugs across the country.
Buba Marwa, chairman of the NDLEA, disclosed this on Tuesday in Lagos during the inauguration of the agency’s central exhibit office, donated by the United States government.
The facility, located at the NDLEA headquarters annex in Ikoyi, aims to enhance evidence handling in drug-related cases.
Speaking at the event, Marwa attributed the agency’s success to strategic partnerships, particularly with the U.S. government.
“This donation acknowledges the critical need for efficient and secure handling of evidence, which is essential for the successful prosecution of drug-related cases.
This contribution will not only strengthen our operational framework but also set a new standard for accountability and transparency in drug law enforcement,” he said.
Despite the recorded successes, Marwa emphasized that the fight against drug trafficking and abuse remains a daunting challenge.
“As an organization, we are committed to surmounting the challenges,” he added, noting that the agency’s personnel continue to push boundaries in combating the drug menace.
Marwa praised the agency’s dedication and called for sustained collaboration with international and local partners to reinforce its efforts in drug supply reduction and advocacy for drug demand reduction.
The newly inaugurated central exhibit office is expected to bolster the NDLEA’s operational efficiency, particularly in the secure handling of evidence critical to drug-related prosecutions.
Marwa described the facility as an investment in the security and future of both Nigeria and its international partners.
While the NDLEA celebrates its achievements, the chairman reiterated the agency’s commitment to intensify the fight against drug trafficking and abuse, stressing that the journey towards a drug-free society requires relentless effort.
