The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) says it has made significant strides in curbing drug trafficking,saying, it recently apprehended two suspects involved in illicit drug activities in Oniwaya, Yaba, and Agege areas of Lagos State.
Identified as Monday Okeke and Chigozie Emeka, the suspects were apprehended on Tuesday, March 26, according to a statement by Femi Babafemi, the NDLEA Director of Media and Advocacy.
Babafemi said during the operation, authorities seized a substantial amount of illicit substances from the suspects, including 842,560 pills of opioids, particularly tramadol, along with 15 litres of codeine syrup and 596 grams of Molly.
He disclosed that in a daring attempt to evade justice, Okeke allegedly tried to bribe NDLEA officers with a staggering sum of N5 million in cash.
He said however, the officers steadfastly rejected the bribe, and the money was duly documented as evidence to prosecute the suspects in court.
He added that the NDLEA’s efforts extended beyond Lagos, with successful operations in Taraba, Abia, Ondo, Edo, and Kano states.
According to him,in Taraba, Abubakar Mohammed was found in possession of 39,980 tramadol pills, while Apaji Vincent was apprehended in Wukari with 131kg of cannabis sativa.
In Abia state, Nwachukwuu Chinedu was nabbed with 46.65kg of cannabis and various quantities of tramadol, methamphetamine, and rohypnol. Meanwhile, in Ondo, a significant seizure of 127.5kg of cannabis occurred along the Isua/Kabba road, and in Edo, 278kg of cannabis was discovered in Oloma-Okpe forest.
The NDLEA said it also conducted successful raids on drug farms in Edo, where they destroyed over 3,000kg of cannabis. During these operations, three suspects—James Thankgod, Wisdom James, and Akpa Festus—were arrested.
Additionally, a female suspect, Chinasa Christopher, was apprehended in Kano with 400 bottles of codeine syrup, while the owner of an intercepted drug consignment along the Zaria-Kano road was arrested in Lagos and subsequently flown to Kano to face charges.
