The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Tincan Special Area Command, announced a significant breakthrough on Thursday, revealing the interception of 876.453 kilograms of various illicit drugs and controlled substances in 2023.
In a statement issued by Area Commander Mohammed Abubakar, the intercepted drugs included 24kg of cocaine, 852.45kg of cannabis, and 0.003kg of Tramadol, bringing the total to 876.453kg.
Abubakar disclosed that during this period, 15 individuals were apprehended and faced legal proceedings, resulting in the conviction of 10 of them.
This accomplishment was attributed to the relentless efforts and meticulous investigations that dismantled several drug trafficking networks.
“The Tincan Special Area Command has been actively involved in strategic operations, targeting illicit drug smuggling activities and apprehending those responsible,” Abubakar stated.
He highlighted the success of recent months, showcasing multiple seizures and arrests, affirming the agency’s commitment to eradicating drug-related crimes.
In a specific operation at the Tincan port, 161.5kg of Cannabis Indica (Colorado) was seized, accompanied by an attempted bribe of $22,900 offered to officers.
The drugs were concealed within cargo shipments of used vehicles from Montreal, Canada, indicating the sophistication of the involved drug traffickers.
Abubakar emphasized collaborative efforts with national and international law enforcement agencies, leading to the identification and apprehension of key players in drug networks.
Throughout 2023, the command conducted various sensitization and enlightenment activities, including advocacy visits, public enlightenment sessions, rallies, and engagement with traditional rulers and non-governmental organizations.
Under the banner of ‘War Against Drug Abuse’ (WADA), these activities aimed to reduce the demand and abuse of illicit drugs and psychotropic substances in Nigeria.
The NDLEA Tincan Special Area Commander expressed gratitude to stakeholders in the maritime industry and other relevant government agencies for their unwavering support.
He urged licensed Customs clearing agents to cease the practice of authorizing third-party individuals to clear cargo under their company stamp, emphasizing the potential liabilities this practice incurs.
In a stern message to those involved in drug trafficking and illicit activities, Abubakar declared the NDLEA’s commitment to utilizing every available resource to bring them to justice and end their illegal operations.
He assured continued enhancements in intelligence capabilities, investment in modern equipment, and ongoing training for officers to combat drug trafficking effectively.
The NDLEA encouraged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities related to drug trafficking to relevant law enforcement agencies, emphasizing the collective effort required to create a safer and drug-free environment for all Nigerians.
