The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has carried out a daring rescue operation, saving five pregnant teenage girls who were believed to be victims of child trafficking in Imo state.
The young victims, aged between 15 and 17, were intercepted during their relocation from a hideout in the Naze area of Owerri to the Ikenegbu area of the state capital.
NDLEA’s spokesperson, Femi Babafemi, revealed that the girls claimed not to know the men responsible for their pregnancies. In response to this harrowing situation, the Imo state command of the agency has been directed to hand them over to the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) for further investigation.
In another significant development, a drug dealer, Segun Odeyemi, was sentenced to five years in prison for trafficking and dealing in a massive 3,842 kilograms of skunk.
Odeyemi was apprehended while transporting the illicit substance in his truck in the Eleganza area of Ajah, Lekki.
The NDLEA also continued its relentless efforts to combat drug smuggling, intercepting drug consignments at various locations.
At the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos, operatives thwarted attempts to export methamphetamine and skunk, both concealed in unconventional items.
In addition to these operations, the NDLEA arrested suspects involved in cannabis trafficking in Kogi state and Ogun state, as well as individuals smuggling codeine-based syrup in different parts of the country.
Chairman and CEO of NDLEA, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (Retd), commended the dedication of NDLEA officers and men across various commands in their efforts to combat drug abuse and raise awareness through sensitization activities.
He emphasized the importance of continuing these efforts to reach communities, schools, places of worship, workplaces, and traditional institutions.
