The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has intercepted multiple consignments of illicit drugs ingeniously concealed in frozen snails, electric bulbs, and female clothing at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos.
The agency said the narcotics, which were bound for the United States, United Kingdom, and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), were uncovered during a series of coordinated operations carried out this month.
NDLEA spokesperson, Femi Babafemi, in a statement on Sunday, disclosed that two suspects had been arrested in connection with the seizures.
According to him, a cargo agent, Boladale Riliwan, was nabbed on October 7 after officers discovered 15 parcels of skunk, a potent strain of cannabis, hidden inside ten giant rechargeable electric bulbs meant for export to the DRC.
In a separate operation, 48-year-old UK-based public health assistant, Olawale Oyebola Hakeemot, was arrested on October 12 while attempting to board a Qatar Airways flight to Manchester. A search of her luggage reportedly led to the discovery of 2,300 Tramadol 225mg pills stuffed inside frozen snails.
Babafemi added that NDLEA operatives also foiled another syndicate’s plan to ship 810 bromazepam pills to the United States. The pills were concealed in female clothing at a courier company in Lagos before officers intercepted them on October 16.
The anti-narcotics agency further revealed that its operatives in Adamawa State apprehended Bello Buba at an NDLEA checkpoint in Namtari, Yola South Local Government Area, with 38,270 Tramadol tablets hidden inside the spare tyre, boot, and door panels of his Honda Civic. The suspect was said to have driven in from Benin Republic.
