…FG Pledges inclusive Process With States, Private Sector
The National Economic Council (NEC) on Thursday approved the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Medium-Term Development Plan (2026–2030) and endorsed fresh measures to consolidate gains in polio vaccination coverage across the country.
The 151st NEC meeting, held at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, was presided over by Vice President Kashim Shettima.
Briefing journalists after the meeting, the Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Atiku Bagudu, explained that the new medium-term plan would serve as a bridge between the outgoing 2021–2025 national development plan and the Nigeria Agenda 2050, the country’s long-term growth blueprint.
According to him, the 2026–2030 plan will focus on job creation, infrastructure renewal, food security, human capital development, and social protection, while aligning with ongoing government reforms.
Bagudu added that the drafting process will be inclusive, drawing contributions from state governments, political parties, the private sector, civil society groups, labour unions, youth organisations, and traditional leaders.
“Structures such as a National Steering Committee and technical sub-committees, co-chaired by government and private sector representatives, will guide the exercise to ensure broad participation,” he said.
On public health, the Gombe State Governor, Inuwa Yahaya, who chairs the NEC Committee on Polio Eradication, disclosed that vaccination coverage in Nigeria had risen from 81 percent to 84 percent by June 2025.
Yahaya noted that reported cases of the circulating variant type 2 poliovirus dropped from 78 in 2024 to 42 so far this year, with Kano and Katsina states recording over 80 percent reductions. Zamfara has reported zero cases in 2025, while Sokoto accounted for 13 of the 23 infections nationwide.
He further explained that millions of children had been immunised, while health campaigns also provided nutrition for pregnant women and malaria prevention kits.
NEC approved additional immunisation exercises, including a September 11–14 campaign in high-risk states and an October nationwide integrated drive to protect children under 14 against polio, measles, rubella, and malaria.
Governors at the meeting commended the Planning Ministry for early preparations and urged states to actively engage in the development of the medium-term plan.
