The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has confirmed that a suspected suicide bomber was killed while attempting to infiltrate the Mogadishu Army Cantonment along the Abuja-Nyanya road in the Federal Capital Territory.

The explosion, which occurred on Monday afternoon, sparked panic among commuters and passersby, who fled the scene amid confusion.

Eyewitnesses said  that the blast went off just in front of the army barracks, instantly killing the bomber and injuring a civilian bystander.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, NEMA said it was alerted to the incident at approximately 1:47pm.

The agency swiftly mobilised a response team to the scene, which had already been secured by heavily armed security personnel.

“Information gathered revealed that a suicide bomber attempted to sneak into the barracks but met his Waterloo as the IED exploded on him while trying to negotiate an entry,” the statement read.

NEMA added that the bomb squad from the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) evacuated the injured victim to the National Hospital, Abuja, and took control of the scene for further investigation.

The emergency response operation was concluded at about 5:29pm, according to the agency.

Security and emergency stakeholders present at the scene included personnel from the Nigerian Army, Nigeria Police Force, Department of State Services (DSS), Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), and NEMA.

Authorities have yet to release the identity of the bomber or disclose possible links to terrorist groups. The incident marks a rare but serious security breach attempt in the heart of the FCT.
