The Nigerian Environmental Society (NES), Abeokuta Chapter, has applauded the National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA) for clamping down on more than 15 companies in Ogun State over alleged violations of environmental laws.
The society described the crackdown as a “bold and commendable step” to safeguard public health and restore environmental integrity in one of Nigeria’s most industrialized states.
In a statement signed by its Chairman, Alhaji (Chief) Jamiu Badmos (MNES), the society noted that Ogun State, home to numerous manufacturing and processing industries, has over the years faced mounting environmental pressure from industrial activities.
“Many of these companies, while contributing to economic growth, are guilty of indiscriminate waste disposal, air pollution, and other harmful practices.
“We are particularly encouraged by NESREA’s renewed vigilance and courage in ensuring compliance.
“This is a victory for the health of our people, the sustainability of our ecosystems, and the future of our communities,” the statement read.
Badmos stressed that protecting the environment is not negotiable for sustainable development, warning that compliance with environmental regulations is mandatory for all industries.
He urged companies to adopt cleaner production methods, embrace eco-friendly technologies, and integrate corporate social responsibility into their operations to mitigate the negative impacts on host communities.
The NES Chapter also pledged closer collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Environment, NESREA, the Ogun State Environmental Protection Agency (OGEPA), and the Ogun State Waste Management Authority (OGWAMA) to strengthen environmental governance and awareness.
“The environment is our collective heritage. We commend NESREA for setting a clear example, and we assure the public that NES Abeokuta Chapter will remain steadfast in its advocacy for a cleaner, healthier, and safer Ogun State,” Badmos added.
The statement further called on regulatory agencies to engage NES Abeokuta Chapter in future enforcement activities to ensure balanced and impartial reporting of environmental issues in the state.
