The newly appointed Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, has vowed that the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) will uphold strict neutrality in all electoral matters, warning that erring officers would face prosecution.
Disu, the 23rd IGP, was sworn in by President Bola Tinubu at the Council Chambers of the State House, Abuja, on Wednesday, shortly before the weekly Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting. He succeeds Kayode Egbetokun, who resigned last month, citing family reasons.
At his inaugural meeting with top police strategists, Disu stressed that the credibility of the 2027 general elections and the stability of Nigeria’s democracy hinge largely on the police as the lead agency in election security.
“As we approach the 2027 elections, our responsibility to the nation becomes both heightened and non-negotiable,” Disu said.
“The police must be firm in enforcing the law, impartial in its decisions, professional in its conduct, and strictly neutral in all electoral engagements.”
The IGP declared zero tolerance for partisanship, misconduct, or abuse of authority within the ranks.
“Any officer found to have compromised neutrality, violated electoral laws, or acted outside approved rules of engagement will face swift and decisive disciplinary action, including prosecution. There will be no exceptions and no excuses,” he said.
Disu added that the police would secure the electoral process before, during, and after the elections, protecting democratic institutions, electoral officials, voters, and critical infrastructure.
He assured that crowd control duties would be conducted with restraint, respecting human rights, and that any use of force would be lawful, proportionate, and accountable.
While pledging close coordination with the armed forces and other security agencies, Disu emphasized that the police would retain leadership and full responsibility for election security operations.
Beyond the polls, he reiterated his commitment to reforms within the force, aiming to restore public trust.
Misconduct, corruption, extortion, unlawful arrests, and abuse of power would not be tolerated, Disu said, adding that the Force Provost, Complaints Response Unit, and X-Squad would operate independently and decisively. “No officer is above the law,” he declared.
The IGP’s warning comes amid concerns over security and electoral fairness as the nation gears up for one of its most consequential elections in recent history.
