The newly appointed Director General of the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP), Binta Lami Adamu Bello, has vowed to fight against human trafficking in Nigeria and rigorously enforce all counter-trafficking laws and policies in line with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s renewed hope agenda.
Speaking during her first address to the management and officers of the agency in Abuja, Bello emphasized her commitment to minimising human trafficking across the country.
She assured the team of her readiness to build on the achievements of her predecessors and called for heightened efforts and stronger coordination within the agency.
“I am ready for enforcement,” Bello declared, following an inspection of the Guards of Honour mounted by NAPTIP’s Parade Squad.
“We shall not, by the grace of God, disappoint Mr. President who has directed me to continue from where others stopped.”
Bello, who succeeded Professor Fatima Waziri–Azi, was appointed as NAPTIP’s eighth Director General on August 6, 2024, as announced by the President’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngalale.
Her appointment is seen as a strategic move to reinforce NAPTIP’s mandate under President Tinubu’s administration.
Outlining her vision for NAPTIP, Bello emphasized the need for all officers to be fully engaged and accountable.
She revealed plans to introduce monthly targets for officers, with performance evaluations to ensure that the agency stays on track with its mission.
“We must work very hard to make sure that we are within the vision and mission of this agency. Anything short of that, we are a failure,” she warned.
In response to her address, the Director of Research and Programme Development, Mr. Josiah Emerole, congratulated Bello on her appointment, expressing confidence that her leadership would elevate NAPTIP’s accomplishments.
“With your notable achievements in previous national assignments, I am certain you will take this agency to greater heights,” Emerole said, pledging the full support of the agency’s workforce.
During an enlarged management meeting with Directors and Heads of Units, vital institutional documents and policies were officially handed over to Bello, marking the formal transition of leadership.
Bello’s extensive experience in government service, including her roles as Permanent Secretary at the Ministries of Women Affairs, Health, and Aviation, as well as Director at NAPEP and the Ministry of Finance, has been highlighted as evidence of her suitability for this crucial role in the fight against human trafficking.
