A newly recruited soldier has allegedly stabbed a police constable, Aaron John to death during a violent altercation in Mayo-Goyi, a suburb of Jalingo, the Taraba State capital.
The incident, which occurred around 9:00 p.m. on Monday, has sparked outrage among residents and further strained civil-military relations in the area.
The deceased officer, was reportedly responding to a distress call from community members over a dispute involving the soldier, Dauda Dedan, when the tragic confrontation ensued.
According to the spokesperson of the Taraba State Police Command, SP James Lashen, Constable John attempted to intervene in the altercation, but the situation escalated, leading to him being fatally stabbed by the suspect.
Despite efforts to save his life, John succumbed to his injuries.
Confirming the incident to journalists in Jalingo on Wednesday, Lashen said the suspect is currently on the run.
> “We have reported the matter to the 6 Brigade Headquarters of the Nigerian Army, and we’ve been given assurances that the fugitive soldier will be apprehended and brought to justice,” Lashen said.
He added that the police command is working closely with military authorities to track and arrest the suspect.
Meanwhile, the Nigerian Army has reportedly launched a full investigation into the matter, pledging to ensure that justice is served.
The killing has sent shockwaves through the local community, with many residents expressing concern over the rising number of violent confrontations involving security personnel.
The Taraba State Police Command has called for calm, assuring the public that justice will not be compromised.
