A newly married woman has been arrested by the Jigawa State Police Command for allegedly poisoning her husband with rat poison, leading to his death in Gauza village, Jahun Local Government Area of the state.
The incident occurred on Friday, January 23, 2026, at about 5pm, when the deceased reportedly returned home and ate a meal prepared by his wife before suddenly developing severe complications.
Confirming the development on Saturday, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Shi’isu Adam, said the man was rushed to a nearby hospital but was pronounced dead while receiving treatment.
Adam disclosed that detectives from the Jahun Division launched an investigation immediately after the incident and arrested the wife as the prime suspect.
“During interrogation, the suspect confessed to poisoning her husband’s food with rat poison. She also claimed that she sent her cousin to purchase the substance used,” the police spokesperson said.
According to him, the suspect further alleged that she had been forced into the marriage by her parents, a situation she claimed pushed her into committing the act.
The police spokesman said the Commissioner of Police in the state had ordered the transfer of the case to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Dutse for a thorough investigation.
He added that upon the conclusion of investigations, the suspect would be charged to court for prosecution.
Meanwhile, the police command urged residents to seek lawful and peaceful means of resolving marital and family disputes, warning against taking laws into their hands.
“The command remains committed to the protection of lives and property across the state and will ensure that justice is served in this case,” Adam said
