The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has dismissed claims by former Super Eagles defender Taribo West that it abandoned the families of late football legends, Peter Rufai and Christian Chukwu, insisting that it provided both moral and financial support during their burials.
West, in an emotional outburst at Rufai’s funeral in Lagos on Friday, accused the federation and the Lagos State Government of neglecting the late goalkeeper’s family, forcing them to seek funds to give him a befitting burial.
The ex-international went as far as vowing never to allow his son to play for Nigeria, describing the treatment of Rufai and other past football heroes as “madness.”
But in a swift response, the NFF, through a statement posted on its official X handle, maintained that it “stood in solidarity” with the families of the departed football icons.
The federation explained that it supported Christian Chukwu’s burial by providing financial aid and sending a delegation led by its Executive Committee Member, Chief George Aluo, alongside Barr. Okey Obi and Mr. Chikelue Iloenyosi.
It added that during Rufai’s funeral mass in Lagos, another delegation—comprising Alhaji Ganiyu Majekodunmi and Dr. Ademola Olajire—was present to represent the federation and also extended financial support to the family.
The statement read in part: “The NFF honoured their service, celebrated their legacy, and extended continued support to their families.”
West, however, had blasted both the NFF and Lagos State Government, lamenting that the neglect of football heroes had become a recurring shame.
He cited similar experiences faced by late stars such as Stephen Keshi, Rashidi Yekini, Thompson Oliha and Yisa Sofoluwe.
Breaking down in tears at Rufai’s burial, West said: “My mother passed on, I never shed tears. My father died in my hands, I never shed tears. But when Rufai died, I broke down. For this country to treat him like this, it is madness.”
The controversy has once again reignited debate over how Nigeria treats its sporting legends, many of whom die in poor conditions despite dedicating their lives to national service.
