Tensions ran high in Kano State as citizens took to the streets to voice their discontent over the potential use of force to address the ongoing political turmoil caused by the coup in Niger Republic.

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), led by Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu, has directed its standing force to remain on standby, sparking concerns over the possibility of a military intervention to restore constitutional order in Niger.

Protesters from various walks of life, spanning the length and breadth of Kano metropolis, united in their call for a peaceful resolution to the crisis.

Chants of “Nigeriens are our brothers, Nigeriens are also our family” echoed through the streets as citizens expressed their solidarity with the neighboring nation.

“Niger is ours; we reject the idea of war,” protesters vehemently declared, denouncing any form of aggression against Niger as unjust and allegedly orchestrated by external influences.

The streets were adorned with the vibrant colors of both the Nigerian and Nigerien flags, serving as symbols of unity and shared history. Placards bearing anti-war slogans filled the air with messages of peace and solidarity.

However, amidst the fervor, the Kano State Police Command dismissed reports of the protests as mere rumors.

The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Haruna Kiyawa, clarified that the viral video depicting demonstrators was, in fact, members of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN), commonly known as Shi’itees.

As the situation unfolds, the streets of Kano remain a testament to the complex blend of concerns over regional stability, the call for peaceful diplomacy, and skepticism towards potential external involvement.
