In a development that could trigger major political tremors in Nigeria, three Sahelian nations — Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso — have announced plans to unveil the identities of senior Nigerian politicians allegedly aiding and financing armed bandit groups operating in the country’s troubled North-West.
Security intelligence sources in the countries confirmed that they are in possession of credible information linking some Nigerian politicians to the supply of funds, logistics, and even arms to criminal gangs that have unleashed waves of killings, abductions, and destruction across the region.
According to regional security analyst, Zagazola Makama, officials revealed that a number of suspects connected to arms trafficking have already been arrested.
Investigations, he said, are ongoing to establish the full extent of cross-border complicity fueling insecurity in Nigeria.
“The security agencies in these countries have intercepted critical intelligence. They are ready to release names of Nigerian politicians who have consistently sabotaged the fight against banditry by empowering the very criminals terrorising their people,” Makama disclosed.
The move, according to intelligence operatives, is part of an aggressive regional security initiative aimed at dismantling cross-border criminal networks.
These networks are believed to be driving insurgency, armed banditry, and illicit arms flows across the Sahel and West Africa.
The decision also reflects growing security cooperation among Sahelian states following years of instability worsened by armed groups and weak border controls.
Analysts say the anticipated disclosure may have significant political fallout in Nigeria, where accusations of elite complicity in banditry have long circulated but rarely been backed by verifiable evidence.
Observers warn that if the names are made public, Nigeria’s political establishment may be forced to confront uncomfortable truths about the depth of infiltration of criminal networks into its governance structures.
For years, residents of the North-West have lamented the complicity of “powerful backers” shielding bandits from justice. With the Sahelian neighbours vowing to name names, Nigeria may be on the verge of an unprecedented reckoning in its fight against insecurity.
