Former Nigerian Vice-President, Atiku Abubakar, has raised concerns over the absence of President Bola Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima from the country simultaneously.
Atiku raised questions about the leadership vacuum and the nation’s direction.
President Tinubu’s recent travels have sparked controversy, with his departure to France last Thursday following a trip to Saudi Arabia.
While the purpose of his visit to France was not officially disclosed by the Presidency, sources said that it was for medical reasons, adding to the speculation surrounding his health.
Meanwhile, Vice President Shettima departed for Dallas, USA, to represent President Tinubu at the 2024 US-Africa Business Summit, leaving the nation without its top two leaders at a critical time.
Atiku expressed his dismay over the absence of both leaders, particularly amidst the challenges facing the nation.
He emphasized the unprecedented nature of their simultaneous absence and questioned who was effectively steering the affairs of the country in their absence.
In a statement addressing the situation, Atiku highlighted the risks associated with the absence of the President and Vice President during a period of economic hardship and social unrest.
He underscored the need for clarity regarding the chain of command and governance structure in their absence, raising concerns about the country’s direction amid ongoing crises.
“At a time when Nigeria is confronted with daunting challenges, the absence of both the President and Vice President raises serious questions about the leadership of the country,” Atiku remarked.
“We cannot afford to be on autopilot during these turbulent times.”
