Vice President, Kashim Shettima, has disclosed that Nigeria lost over N300 billion during the #EndBadGovernance protests in August.

The former Borno Governor disclosed this on Tuesday while speaking to reporters at the Presidential Villa during the official handover of minors who participated in the nationwide protest to their state governors.

The #EndBadGovernance protests, triggered by the rising cost of living in the country and quest for good governance, were held across Nigeria from August 1 to August 10, 2024.

During these protests, citizens demonstrated their displeasure with the growing economic hardship caused by the policies of President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

The government consequently arrested and detained hundreds of protesters including minors who endured mistreatment in prison facilities for over three months.

An Abuja Federal High Court on Tuesday struck out the treasonous charges brought against 119 Nigerians, including minors detained since August for participating in the nationwide protest.

This was pronounced by Obiora Egwuatu, the presiding judge, who struck out the case following an application by M.D Abubakar, counsel for the Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF), Lateef Fagbemi (SAN).

Speaking about their freedom, Kashim Shettima stated that the demonstrators were released due to the mercy of his principal, President Tinubu.

He said, “Despite incontrovertible digital video and photographic evidence of the perpetration and actions some of which were uploaded by the actors themselves, the president as the father of the nation gave these young men another chance at becoming responsible citizens who will make a positive impact, in a drive for a better Nigeria.

“I would like to admonish you, young men not allow yourselves to be used to perpetrate violence and destroy public and private property.

“Over N300 billion was lost in the protests, consisting mainly private property and loss of business.”
