Nigeria must resist one-party state – Daudu, others

Daudu spoke at the 13th webinar on the overview and mid-term report of the administration of President Bola Tinubu between May 2023 and May 2025, organised by the Rule of Law Development Foundation on Tuesday.

Daudu, who is the coordinator of the foundation, described the alleged moves to establish a one-party state as “selfish, evil and counter-productive.”

He warned that the country must take a detour from that route to avoid the situation being hijacked by centripetal and centrifugal forces in a one-party system, which would eventually explode, and “things will have fallen apart and the centre cannot hold (apologies to Professor Chinua Achebe).”

While harping on the rising insecurity across the country, he advised the president to summon a national conference on the resolution of insecurity, “where all shades of views will be agglomerated and a consensus reached for the executive arm of government to undertake expeditious implementation.”

He lamented the state of corruption in the country with the infusion of new parlance in the national discourse, such as ‘budget padding’, ‘rubber stamp legislature’, ‘oil theft’, ‘illegal mining’, uninhabited and ungoverned spaces’, ‘snakes and monkeys and even rodents swallowing up government money in custody’, among others.

Similarly, a public affairs analyst, Jide Ojo, said the first half of the Tinubu presidency has seen some unprecedented developments in the economy and security, calling on the civil society and the media to collaboratively work to bring the government to account.
