Nigeria grapples with yet another nationwide blackout as the national electricity grid suffered a collapse for the second time in three months in 2024.
Managed centrally from Osogbo, Osun state, the grid collapsed at 4:30 pm on Thursday, plunging millions of homes and businesses into darkness.
Various distribution companies (DisCos) reported inactive feeders, leading to widespread blackouts across the country.
Data from the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) revealed that the grid collapsed at approximately 4 pm, dropping from 2,984 megawatts (MW) to zero within an hour, with all 21 plants connected to the grid ceasing operations by 5 pm.
The Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) issued a statement attributing the power outage to a system failure from the national grid, stating,”The system collapsed at about 16:28 hours today, March 28, 2024, causing the outage currently being experienced across our franchise area.”
Similarly, the Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC) notified its customers of the system collapse, resulting in a loss of power supply across its network.
The management assured customers of efforts being made in collaboration with partners for the speedy restoration of the grid, pledging to provide updates as soon as power supply is restored.
This blackout marks the second occurrence in 2024, adding to the challenges faced by Nigerians in accessing reliable electricity.
It also recalls the grid collapses experienced in 2023 on September 14, 19, and December 11, reflecting the persistent vulnerabilities in the country’s power infrastructure.
