In a determined effort to combat unprofessional behavior, extortion, and harassment plaguing Nigeria’s highways, the Inspector General of Police, Ag. IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, Ph.D., NPM, has taken a firm stand against such misconduct.
The move comes as a response to a series of complaints and concerns expressed by both the public and the National Assembly regarding the actions of certain police personnel.
Expressing deep concern over the actions of a minority of officers that have sullied the reputation of the police force, the IGP is resolute in addressing these issues head-on.
Reports of alleged extortion, intimidation, and harassment of commuters on major highways have caught the attention of the force, which is now committed to resolving the matters swiftly and resolutely.
To tackle the problem at its roots, the IGP has issued directives for rigorous supervision of officers in the field by their superiors.
The aim is to curb and eliminate unprofessional conduct among erring officers.
The IGP stressed the need for proactive measures by supervising officers to prevent misconduct, and immediate action is expected to rectify any such behavior.
Understanding that a comprehensive solution is vital, the Nigeria Police Force has initiated robust training and retraining programs.
These initiatives are designed to instill a culture of civility and professionalism, aiming to induce behavioral and attitudinal changes among personnel.
The IGP firmly believes that a continuous emphasis on ethical standards and learning will strengthen the bond between the force and the public it serves.
To enforce accountability, the Monitoring Unit and other Disciplinary Units have been instructed to intensify their efforts in identifying and apprehending officers involved in misconduct.
The IGP has warned that severe disciplinary measures await personnel found guilty of such offenses, serving as a deterrent for future misconduct. Superiors failing in their oversight duties will also face appropriate sanctions.
Under the current leadership, the Nigeria Police Force is steadfast in upholding the highest standards of professionalism, integrity, and public service.
The IGP has urged the public to report instances of misconduct, assuring citizens that stringent measures will be taken to prevent the actions of a few from tarnishing the reputation of the entire force.
