In the recently released Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) for 2024 by Transparency International, Nigeria has been ranked as the 36th most corrupt country globally, alongside Uganda, Mexico, Madagascar, Iraq, and Cameroon.
The country shares a total score of 26 points, a mere one-point improvement since 2023, with these nations.
The CPI, which measures perceived levels of public sector corruption, reveals that Nigeria’s score of 26 points is significantly below the global average of 43 points.
This places Nigeria in a challenging position, reflecting ongoing concerns regarding bribery, misappropriation of public funds, and other corrupt practices within its governance structures.
Notably, the report highlights that despite modest improvements in some areas, more than two-thirds of countries assessed scored below 50 points, indicating pervasive corruption worldwide.
Transparency International’s chair, Francois Valeria, underscored the global nature of the problem, emphasizing ongoing efforts for reform in many countries.
Denmark emerged as the least corrupt nation with 90 points, followed closely by Finland and Singapore with 88 and 84 points, respectively.
In contrast, no African country made it to the top 10 cleanest nations, with Cape Verde ranking as the least corrupt African country at 35th place with 62 points.
Historical data from the CPI underscores Nigeria’s persistent struggle with corruption over the past five years, with rankings ranging from 145th to 154th place and scores oscillating between 24 and 26 points.
This consistency underscores the challenges Nigeria faces in combating corruption effectively.
Within Africa, Rwanda, Ghana, Burkina Faso, South Africa, Tanzania, Zambia, and The Gambia all ranked ahead of Nigeria in the CPI, signaling varying degrees of progress in anti-corruption efforts across the continent.
The CPI’s methodology draws on expert assessments and business perceptions to rank countries on a scale from 0 (highly corrupt) to 100 (very clean).
It evaluates factors such as bribery, misuse of public office for private gain, and the effectiveness of government measures against corruption.
