The Nigerian government has formally submitted documentation to the Finnish government for the extradition of Simon Ekpa, a pro-Biafran agitator, in a move to address his alleged role in inciting unrest and promoting secessionist agendas.
This was disclosed by the Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, during an interview on Channels Television’s 2024 Year-In-Review programme on December 31, 2024.
General Musa confirmed that all necessary legal requirements and supporting documents for Ekpa’s extradition have been forwarded to Finland for review.
“Legal action will be taken accordingly. I don’t want to say too much, but I’m glad he’s been arrested.
The Federal Government has provided most of the required documentation to the Finnish Government, so I’m confident the right steps will be taken,” Musa said.
Ekpa, a prominent figure in the separatist movement for the independence of southeastern Nigeria, was arrested in November 2024 by Finnish authorities.
The Lahti District Court in Finland subsequently ordered his remand on charges of public incitement to commit crimes with terrorist intent, among other allegations.
Ekpa is accused of using social media platforms to propagate separatist propaganda, incite violence, and promote the financing of terrorism.
His activities have been linked to escalating tensions and unrest in Nigeria’s southeast region, leading to calls for his arrest and extradition.
General Musa expressed confidence in the cooperation between Nigeria and Finland in ensuring due legal processes are followed.
“Well, I’m sure he’s cooling off somewhere,” he added, reflecting optimism about Ekpa’s legal accountability.
