Senate President Godswill Akpabio has described the state of Nigeria’s economy as dire when President Bola Tinubu assumed office in May 2023, likening it to being on “life support.”
Akpabio made the remark during his 2024 constituency briefing and empowerment programme at the Ikot Ekpene township stadium in Akwa Ibom State.
Addressing constituents and beneficiaries of the empowerment programme, Akpabio shared insights into Tinubu’s reaction to the economic challenges he inherited.
“I once asked President Tinubu, ‘Are you excited about being president after seeing the economy left behind by [former CBN governor] Godwin Emefiele?’He replied, ‘I must tell you, I didn’t know it was this bad,’” Akpabio recounted.
The Senate president expressed optimism about Tinubu’s ongoing reforms, urging Nigerians to remain patient and supportive.
“You did it in Lagos, and you will do it again for Nigeria. It’s just a matter of time. We are praying for you, and God will grant you the wisdom to lead us to El Dorado,” he said.
At the event, Akpabio distributed tools and resources to empower his constituents, urging beneficiaries to use the items to enhance their families’ economic well-being.
He also commended Umo Eno, Akwa Ibom’s governor, for fostering peace and inclusivity across the state.
“Without peace, there cannot be development. The governor has embraced all Akwa Ibom people, regardless of political affiliations,” Akpabio noted.
The event also featured the distribution of foodstuff and other items to communities beyond Ikot Ekpene, covering various senatorial districts in the state.
