The Nigerian Army has apprehended a soldier for allegedly stealing ammunition in Borno State, Northeast Nigeria.
Corporal Francis Bako was detained with 602 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition in his possession, a haul that raises concerns about the internal security protocols within the military.
PLATFORM TIMES reports that Bako’s arrest was made possible by the combined efforts of the troops from Operation Hadin Kai and the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF) in Maiduguri.
This joint operation underscores the ongoing collaboration between military forces and local security outfits to combat insurgency and criminal activities in the region.
According to military sources and corroborated by Zagazola Makama, a noted counter-insurgency expert and security analyst in the Lake Chad region, the arrest took place at the Kano Motor Park in Maiduguri.
Makama, through his post on X (formerly Twitter), revealed that the arrest followed a tip-off, leading to a strategic operation that intercepted Bako as he prepared to travel to Kaduna.
Upon searching Bako, the troops discovered the substantial cache of ammunition.
The immediate response and coordination between the military and CJTF were crucial in thwarting what could have been a severe threat had the ammunition reached its intended destination.
The suspect, Corporal Bako, has been handed over to army authorities and is currently in military custody.
The Nigerian Army has yet to release an official statement regarding the incident, but the arrest has sparked discussions about the security measures in place to prevent such internal thefts and the potential implications of such breaches.
