Nigerian Army Disputes Police Claim Over Rescue Of Kidnapped Israeli National In Taraba

The Nigerian Army has vehemently countered assertions made by the police regarding the recent rescue operation of Israeli citizen Gil Itamar, who was abducted in Taraba State.

Captain Oni Olubodunde, spokesperson for the Army’s 6 Brigade, clarified that military operatives, supported by other security agencies, executed the successful rescue mission.

In a direct response to claims made by the Taraba State Police Command, Captain Olubodunde emphasized that the military, acting on credible intelligence, rescued Mr. Itamar without resorting to gunfire.

He dismissed the police’s assertion that the victim had military escorts at the time of abduction as misleading and cautioned against the reckless dissemination of sensitive operational details.

The controversy unfolded following a press release by the Taraba State Police Command, attributing credit to the police for Mr. Itamar’s rescue on April 3, 2025, in the Atim Community along the Takum–Chanchangi Road.

Captain Olubodunde clarified, “Contrary to the police claim, Mr. Gil Itamar was alone in his vehicle when abducted.”

He credited the success of the operation to collaborative efforts with local community leaders and stressed the importance of accurate reporting to maintain public trust and security.

The Nigerian Army reiterated its commitment to ensuring the safety of all residents and visitors in Taraba State, underscoring the necessity for precise inter-agency coordination in maintaining peace and security.

This dispute highlights ongoing challenges in coordinating security efforts amidst sensitive operations, urging greater caution in public statements to avoid misinformation that could undermine security efforts and public confidence.
