A Nigerian Army officer, Lieutenant Samson Haruna, has been confirmed dead after sustaining severe burns when his wife allegedly set him ablaze during a domestic dispute at the Wellington Bassey Barracks, Ibagwa, Abak Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State.
The tragic incident reportedly occurred on September 22, 2025, during a heated quarrel between the couple. Sources told PLATFORM TIMES that Mrs. Haruna, in a fit of rage, allegedly poured petrol on her husband and set him on fire.
Lt. Haruna, who was also a medical doctor and the Regimental Medical Officer (RMO) attached to the 6 Battalion, was rushed to the Military Reference Section (MRS) within the barracks before being evacuated to the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital.
Despite frantic efforts by medical personnel to save his life, the officer eventually succumbed to his injuries.
Security analyst, Zagazola Makama, who confirmed the incident, described it as a “disturbing development” that has sent shockwaves through the military community.
A military source disclosed: “The officer sustained severe burns and was initially stabilised at the barracks hospital before being moved to UUTH for advanced care. Unfortunately, he could not make it.”
It was further gathered that the suspect, Mrs. Haruna, has since been arrested and placed in custody while investigations into the matter are ongoing.
The Nigerian Army is yet to issue an official statement as of the time of filing this report.
