The Nigerian Army has initiated a thorough investigation into a disturbing incident at the 8 Division Garrison detention facility in Sokoto State, where soldiers were seen protesting against alleged overcrowded cells and poor living conditions.
The uproar was triggered by complaints from detained soldiers, with reports indicating that tensions escalated to the extent that shots were fired, resulting in injuries, including the reported shooting of Lance Corporal Charles Ekefure.
The soldiers purportedly demanded to speak with Major General Mutkut Godwin, the GOC 8 Division, Nigerian Army, regarding their grievances.
According to sources, over 100 soldiers were detained at the facility, with cramped conditions, and some detainees having been held for up to five years.
In response to the incident, Major General Onyema Nwachukwu, the Director of Army Public Relations, issued a statement expressing regret over the situation, describing it as unfortunate and contrary to the leadership style of the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja.
Nwachukwu emphasized the Army’s commitment to investigating whether the incident was an isolated case or indicative of broader issues within similar detention facilities.
He underscored the gravity of the soldiers’ actions, labeling them as mutinous and conduct prejudicial to service order.
Despite acknowledging the need to address grievances, he condemned the manner in which the soldiers expressed their discontent.
The statement affirmed the Army’s resolve to maintain professional standards and uphold a just and fair system, even for detainees awaiting trial.
It assured Nigerians of the Army’s dedication to addressing security challenges in collaboration with other security agencies.
