The Nigerian Institute of Landscape Horticulturists (NILH) is gearing up to host its 17th Natural Conference and Annual General Meeting, gathering environmental professionals, scholars, and enthusiasts from across Nigeria to explore the role of landscape horticulture in achieving sustainable environmental protection.

The event, themed “Unveiling The Potentials of Landscape Horticulture for Environmental Protection and Sustainability,” is scheduled for November 25th–29th, 2024, at the University of Abuja’s Faculty of Agriculture Auditorium, along the Airport Road at the institution’s permanent site.

PLATFORM TIMES reports that the conference will tackle critical sub-themes relevant to Nigeria’s urbanisation and environmental challenges, including “Environmental Landscape and Beautification for Urban Cities, Renewal and Healthy Living,” “Landscape Management Approaches and Technologies,” “The Relevance of Edible Softscape Components and Food Security,” “Ornamental Plant Production and Nursery Business as a Viable Means of Employment and Livelihood,” and “Hardscape Selection, Installation, and Durability.”

Dr. Emmanuel Abimbola Bankole, the National President of NILH, will serve as the chief host, with the Honourable Minister for the Federal Capital Territory, Barr. Nyson Wike, endorsing the event.

Professor Aishat Maikudi, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Abuja, will also host attendees, underscoring the academic sector’s support for sustainable development initiatives.

Dr. Iziaq Adekunle Salako, Nigeria’s former Minister of State for Environment, is set to deliver the keynote address, bringing insights into the government’s commitment to environmental sustainability.

In addition, the conference will honour distinguished figures, including Senator Olamilekan Solomon Adeola popularly called Yayi and Prince Adewole Adebayo, who will receive fellowship awards for their contributions to landscape development and environmental stewardship.

Leading the first paper presentation will be Dr. Abdullai Ndarubu, Chief Operating Officer of Harvest Field Industries Nigeria Ltd., alongside Dr. John O. Alabi, whose research is expected to spark in-depth discussions on innovative solutions for the landscape and horticulture industry in Nigeria.

As Nigeria faces increasing challenges related to urbanization, environmental degradation, and food security, this conference represents a vital platform for dialogue, innovation, and partnership.

“This event promises to be an impactful gathering, exploring the intersection of environmental science, sustainable landscape practices, and community wellbeing,” Dr. Bankole stated, highlighting NILH’s commitment to promoting green landscapes as essential to a sustainable future.

Interested participants are encouraged to join the discourse on landscape horticulture’s role in promoting a greener Nigeria. For inquiries, contact Mr. Akinrinlola Femi at 08033850331 or the NILHC Secretary, Dr. Ibrahim Halimah Musa, at 08038098324.

The conference reflects a growing movement toward environmental awareness, with NILH leading efforts to address urban beautification, sustainable food systems, and job creation through horticulture.
