Two committees of the House of Representatives have submitted a petition to the Canadian government seeking the prosecution of Amaka Sunnberger over threats against Yoruba and Edo people in Canada.

The petition, jointly signed by Biodun Omoleye, Chairman of the Nigeria-Canada Parliamentary Friendship Group, and Tochukwu Okere, Chairman of the Committee on Diaspora Affairs, was addressed to James Christoff.

It is reported that Sunnberger allegedly made comments on TikTok stating that she plans to poison Yoruba and Edo people in Canada.

In the letter, dated 28 August 2024, the lawmakers called on the Canadian government to investigate and prosecute Sunnberger for the threats.

“Ms Sunnberger has recently been recorded making inflammatory statements that incite violence against the Yoruba and Edo ethnic groups in Nigeria, including advocating for the poisoning of food and water supplies to achieve mass genocide,” the letter reads in part.

The lawmakers added that “Her public incitement of hatred against the Yoruba and Edo people is prohibited under Section 319 (1), which criminalizes the communication of statements in public that incite hatred against any identifiable group, where such incitement is likely to lead to a breach of the peace.”

They also requested that the Canadian government denounce her comments.

“We request that the Canadian government issue a public condemnation of Ms. Sunnberger’s actions to reaffirm Canada’s commitment to combating hate speech, violence, and genocide,” the letter read.
