Nigerian Man Arrested For Scamming Indian Woman Of Over ₦9m With Fake Marriage Proposal

A Nigerian man identified as Johnson has been arrested in Delhi, India, for allegedly defrauding an Indian woman from Chhattisgarh’s Rajnandgaon district of approximately ₦9.1 million through a fraudulent marriage proposal.

The Rajnandgaon police disclosed that Johnson, who had overstayed his visa and passport, lured the victim through a fake matrimonial profile, posing as a UK-based businessman intending to expand his business into India.

According to the police, Johnson gained the woman’s trust before orchestrating a scam with an accomplice.

The duo reportedly claimed Johnson was stranded at Delhi airport and required money to exchange UK currency, convincing the victim to transfer ₹15,72,000 (about ₦9.1 million).

Speaking on the arrest, Rahul Dev Sharma, Additional Superintendent of Police, Rajnandgaon, said, “He blackmailed the woman and cheated her with the assistance of an accomplice.

When she later tried contacting him, his phone was switched off, which prompted her to lodge a fraud case with the Dongargarh Police cyber cell.”

Investigators traced Johnson to his hideout in Delhi, where he was apprehended. Police recovered a laptop, four mobile phones, and froze his bank account.

Further investigations revealed Johnson, 40, is a Nigerian national with a history of targeting women through matrimonial platforms.

“We are interrogating the accused to gather more information about his past crimes,” Sharma added.
