In February 2025, Nigeria’s crude oil production fell short of the OPEC quota, reflecting a downward trend in the country’s oil output.
According to data analyzed by SaharaReporters, Nigeria produced 1.671 million barrels per day, inclusive of both blended and unblended condensates.
This figure marks a decline from January 2025, when production stood at 1.737 million barrels per day.
However, when considering only crude oil production excluding condensates, which aligns with OPEC quota calculations, Nigeria’s output was 1.465 million barrels per day in February 2025.
This figure also represents a decrease from January’s production of 1.538 million barrels per day, thereby failing to meet the 1.5 million barrels per day target set by OPEC for its member states.
This shortfall is part of a broader pattern where Nigeria has consistently struggled to meet its OPEC production quotas.
Similar production deficits were observed in December 2024 (1.484 million barrels per day) and November 2024 (1.485 million barrels per day).
Throughout 2023 and 2022, Nigeria faced challenges in meeting the 1.5 million barrels per day quota, indicating persistent issues within the country’s oil sector.
Gbenga Komolafe, CEO of the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission, previously outlined Nigeria’s OPEC-approved production quotas, underscoring a history of underperformance in meeting these targets.
Analysts attribute Nigeria’s ongoing production struggles to various factors, including crude oil theft, illegal bunkering, pipeline vandalism, and operational inefficiencies.
Aging infrastructure and mismanagement have also contributed to production losses, compounded by regulatory delays and policy uncertainties in the oil sector.
The implications of Nigeria’s failure to meet its OPEC production targets extend beyond the oil industry, impacting revenue generation, foreign exchange earnings, and broader economic stability.
