In a sudden development, Nigeria’s Minister of Defence, Alhaji Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, has resigned his appointment with immediate effect, citing health reasons, the Presidency confirmed on Monday.
A statement by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Information and Strategy, said the minister formally tendered his resignation in a letter dated December 1.
“President Tinubu has accepted the resignation and thanked Alhaji Badaru Abubakar for his service to the nation,” the statement read.
The 63-year-old former Jigawa State governor, who served two terms from 2015 to 2023, was appointed as Nigeria’s Defence Minister on August 21, 2023, by President Tinubu.
His tenure coincided with increasing security challenges in the country, including a recent declaration of a national security emergency by the President, aimed at curbing insurgency, banditry, and other violent crimes.
President Tinubu is expected to inform the Senate of a successor later this week, sources said.
Speaking on the resignation, political analysts noted that the move comes at a critical juncture for Nigeria’s security architecture.
“The resignation of a key minister in the defence sector, especially during a declared national security emergency, is significant. It underscores the pressures and complexities of Nigeria’s fight against insecurity,” said Dr. Ifeanyi Okoye, a security expert.
Abubakar, widely respected for his track record as Jigawa State governor, was credited with infrastructural development, educational reforms, and initiatives to improve social welfare in the northern state.
His appointment to the Defence Ministry had raised expectations that his administrative experience could translate into stronger institutional reforms and operational efficiency in the military.
The Presidency’s statement emphasized that Abubakar’s decision was health-related and that his contributions to national security and governance would be remembered.
“Alhaji Badaru Abubakar brought dedication and commitment to his role as Minister of Defence. President Tinubu commends his service and wishes him well in his future endeavors,” Onanuga said.
