The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has released data revealing a total of 46 grid collapses that occurred in the country between 2017 and 2022.
While this information underscores the challenges faced by Nigeria’s power grid during this period, the TCN also emphasizes a noteworthy reduction in the frequency of such incidents over the years.
Notably, the TCN recently celebrated an impressive milestone, announcing that the nation had experienced 400 consecutive days without any grid collapse.
This achievement marked 13.3 months of uninterrupted stability in the Nigerian power grid.
Examining the historical data, it is evident that grid collapses have been a recurring issue over the past six years. In 2017, there were a total of 15 grid collapses, followed by 12 incidents in 2018.
This trend continued with 9 grid collapses in 2019, while the number decreased to 4 in 2020. In 2021, only 2 grid collapses were recorded.
The TCN’s General Manager, Mrs. Ndidi Mbah, hailed this milestone achievement, describing it as a significant advancement in the nation’s efforts to fortify its power infrastructure and ensure a dependable electricity supply to distribution load centers, ultimately benefiting electricity customers across the country.
The sustained stability and reliability of the Nigerian power grid, according to the TCN, can be attributed to a combination of strategic measures and investments made in the power system under the TCN’s management.
Key elements contributing to this accomplishment include the Configuration and Enforcement of Free Governor Control and the effective Under-frequency Relay Scheme, among others.
Mrs. Mbah revealed that the TCN had formed a three-person committee tasked with configuring and activating the Primary Reserve in coordination with power stations, adhering to the provisions outlined in the Grid code.
While acknowledging the progress made in ensuring grid stability, the TCN continues to work diligently to address the challenges facing Nigeria’s power sector.
The reduction in grid collapses is a testament to the commitment to strengthen the nation’s power infrastructure, with the aim of delivering reliable electricity to all corners of the country.
