President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has declared that Nigeria’s recovery from economic hardship and national stagnation is possible — but only if state governors abandon excuses and embrace the urgent task of delivering good governance.
Speaking during an official visit to Nasarawa State on Wednesday, Tinubu said Nigeria’s transformation would remain a mirage unless governors across the country begin to govern with vision, discipline, and a people-first approach.
The president, who was in Lafia to commission a series of infrastructure projects executed by Governor Abdullahi Sule, praised the Nasarawa leader for aligning with the ideals of the Renewed Hope Agenda.
“In Lafia today, I saw that alignment in motion. A working governor. A peaceful state. A people focused on growth. That is the spirit of Renewed Hope,” Tinubu wrote in a post on his official X (formerly Twitter) account.
Sounding a tone both hopeful and cautionary, the president stressed that recovery would not come by rhetoric but through deliberate and coordinated efforts by state governments to prioritize development, planning, execution, and accountability.
“The journey ahead will not be without challenges. But if each state follows the path of delivering good governance — planning, executing, and serving — we will not just recover; Nigeria will rise,” Tinubu declared.
He warned that failure at the subnational level could cripple federal reform efforts, urging governors to lead with “purpose and conviction,” while assuring them of the federal government’s continued support.
“From the campaign trail to the presidency, my message has been consistent: if we align our efforts, if we put the people first, and if we lead with purpose, there is nothing our dear country cannot achieve,” he added.
Tinubu also described the ongoing development efforts as a campaign not only to build infrastructure but to restore the people’s belief in government and governance.
“What we are building is not just roads and bridges. We are building belief. Belief in Nigeria, in progress, and in shared prosperity,” he said.
The president’s remarks come against the backdrop of rising public frustration over worsening inflation, unemployment, and insecurity. Many analysts believe his message serves as both inspiration and indirect criticism of underperforming governors.
Observers say Tinubu’s reference to a “working governor” in Nasarawa was a veiled nudge to others to rise above politicking and begin delivering results, especially at a time when millions of Nigerians are battling soaring cost of living and eroding hope.
