The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a nationwide weather alert forecasting widespread thunderstorms and rainfall across various regions from Monday through Wednesday, July 21–23, 2025.
In its three-day weather outlook released on Sunday in Abuja, the agency warned that early morning thunderstorms are expected to hit parts of Taraba, Adamawa, Kebbi, Borno, Yobe, Gombe, Bauchi, Sokoto, and Kaduna States on Monday.
The forecast indicates that the rest of the northern region will experience sunny skies with intermittent cloud cover.
However, moderate thunderstorms are predicted to resume in the afternoon and evening across Adamawa, Taraba, Kebbi, Bauchi, Borno, Gombe, Katsina, Kano, Zamfara, Kaduna, and Yobe.
For the central region, cloudy skies are expected in the morning, with light thunderstorms over parts of Niger.
Later in the day, Plateau, Nasarawa, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Kogi, Benue, and Niger are to witness increased rainfall and storm activity.
In the southern part of the country, the morning will be mostly cloudy. By the afternoon and evening, light to moderate rains are forecast in Imo, Abia, Bayelsa, Rivers, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom States.
On Tuesday, NiMet said sunny skies with patches of clouds would dominate the morning in the northern belt, followed by thunderstorms and moderate rains in Bauchi, Gombe, Yobe, Jigawa, Adamawa, Taraba, Kano, Katsina, and Kaduna later in the day.
The central region will again face light rain and thunderstorms in Plateau, Benue, Nasarawa, Niger, and the FCT, while parts of the South—Akwa Ibom and Cross River—could see morning precipitation.
Heavier showers are predicted for the afternoon in Ondo, Imo, Enugu, Anambra, Abia, Edo, Rivers, Cross River, Delta, Akwa Ibom, and Bayelsa.
By Wednesday, morning thunderstorms are expected to hit Katsina, Kano, Bauchi, Sokoto, and Taraba. This will intensify in the evening across Yobe, Jigawa, Kaduna, Borno, Kebbi, and Bauchi. Moderate to heavy rains are likely over Ebonyi, Abia, Edo, Ondo, Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom.
The agency urged Nigerians to remain vigilant and take precautionary measures during this weather period.
“Strong winds may precede the rains in some areas. Loose objects should be secured to prevent accidents,” NiMet warned.
“Residents should avoid driving during heavy downpours and disconnect all electrical appliances to prevent surge-related hazards.”
NiMet also advised airline operators to obtain updated, location-specific weather information to aid flight planning.
“Citizens should stay informed through official NiMet updates and visit www.nimet.gov.ng for accurate, real-time forecasts,” the advisory concluded.
