The National Interest Safety and Sanity Initiative for Nurses (NISSIN), a coalition of professional nurses and midwives across Nigeria, has strongly condemned the misrepresentation of a convicted medical quack linked to the death of late singer Ilerioluwa Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad, as a nurse.
In a statement signed by its National Coordinator, Nurse Ogunniyi O. Abiola, and made available to PLATFORM TIMES, the group expressed outrage over what it described as repeated, damaging headlines published by blogs, social media accounts, and some online newspapers, which inaccurately identified the accused as a nurse.
NISSIN clarified that the individual in question “has never been a nurse” and was, in fact, an unlicensed medical practitioner whose illegal actions allegedly contributed to Mohbad’s untimely death.
The group said the media’s reference to her as a nurse is not only factually incorrect but also deeply harmful to the nursing profession.
“Using such language as ‘Nurse Jailed’ is misleading to the public and highly disreputing to the good image of such a beautiful medical profession,” the statement read.
“Nurses are trained to be noble, ethical, and professional in their practices.”
The group called on the media—referred to as “the men of the fourth estate”—to desist from acts of libel, slander, and defamation of professional nurses, noting that mislabeling untrained impostors as nurses damages the integrity of the profession.
NISSIN also used the opportunity to educate the public on legal nursing classifications in Nigeria, emphasizing that titles like “auxiliary nurse,” “nursing assistant,” or “nurse technician” have no legal recognition under the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN).
It described such roles as “aberrations” created by medical scammers, including some rogue doctors, nurses, and politicians.
The organization stressed that only individuals who undergo approved educational and professional processes stipulated by the NMCN should bear the title of Nurse.
“Nursing is a highly dignified profession and should be so honoured and respected in our country, as obtainable in advanced societies,” the group said.
NISSIN reaffirmed its commitment to promoting ideal nursing standards in Nigeria and advised those who cannot meet the required qualifications to seek training in other medical or vocational fields—without impersonating nurses.
The group urged the media to verify facts and uphold professional ethics when reporting on issues involving regulated professions like nursing.
Mohbad, a fast-rising Nigerian artist, died under controversial circumstances in September 2023.
The incident drew widespread attention, with ongoing investigations and legal proceedings surrounding those allegedly involved in his care before his death.
