Justice Nyesom-Wike Suzzette, wife of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has been recommended for promotion to the Court of Appeal.
Suzzette, a sitting judge at the Rivers State High Court and former First Lady of Rivers State, is among 21 judges proposed for elevation by the National Judicial Council (NJC).
This recommendation comes following the 105th plenary meeting of the NJC, held on May 15 and 16, 2024.
Ariwoola Oluwakemi Victoria, the daughter-in-law of the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Olukayode Ariwoola, has been recommended for elevation to the Federal High Court in Abuja.
Victoria is one of 12 judges listed for promotion to the Federal High Court, reflecting .
In total, the NJC has recommended 86 judges for various promotions across Nigeria’s superior courts of record.
These recommendations are based on the assessments made by the Interview Committee on Appointment of Judicial Officers.
The council’s Director of Information, Soji Oye, issued a statement on May 16, 2024, confirming these developments.
He noted that the recommended candidates would assume their new positions only after the NJC’s recommendations are approved by the President and the respective State Governors.
The NJC’s plenary session also addressed issues of judicial misconduct.
Justice Inyang Ekwo of the Federal High Court, Justice G. B. Brikins-Okolosi of the Delta State High Court, and Justice Amina Shehu of the Yobe State High Court were issued warning letters following findings of misconduct.
Ekwo and Brikins-Okolosi face restrictions from elevation to higher benches for two and three years, respectively.
