The Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) have joined forces, delivering a resounding call to the Federal Government to swiftly backtrack on the recent surge in electricity tariffs.

In a unified address during the 2024 Workers’ Day Celebration in Abuja, Presidents Joe Ajaero and Fetus Osifo of NLC and TUC respectively, underscored their dissatisfaction with Nigeria’s inconsistent power supply, branding it a hindrance to the nation’s economic advancement.

“With power being the lifeblood of any thriving economy, Nigeria cannot afford to mismanage this critical sector,” emphasized the union leaders.

They highlighted the dire consequences of neglecting the energy sector, warning of inevitable societal decline if corrective actions aren’t taken promptly.

The crux of their grievance lies in the decade-long persistence of challenges within the power sector following its privatization.

Ajaero and Osifo pointed fingers at the vested interests behind the sector’s woes, highlighting the conflict of interest arising from former sellers turning into buyers.

“The imposition of higher tariffs amidst a backdrop of inadequate electricity provision is not only unjust but also constitutes daylight robbery against Nigerians,” remarked the union heads, condemning the practice of estimated billing as extortionate.

In their plea to the government, NLC and TUC stressed the imperative of collaborative efforts between the authorities and the populace to institute sustainable energy solutions that cater to every Nigerian’s needs.

They called for an immediate reversal of the tariff hike, citing it as a pivotal step towards rectifying the systemic failures plaguing the power sector and fostering national prosperity.
