The Commissioner for Health in Kano State, Dr Abubakar Labaran, has said the Ministry, have taken proactive measures to address the misunderstanding between the Commissioner of Humanitarian Affairs Hajiya Amina HOD and a medical doctor at Murtala Mohammed Specialist Hospital Kano, which was reported in the media.

He said Governor Abba Yusuf, directed the Ministry to investigate the matter and submit a comprehensive report to his office within 48 hours on the exact genesis of the matter.

“We have constituted a committee which is investigating the issue and the case will be resolved amicably”

The Nigerian Medical Association, NMA, had issued a letter to Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, asking him to remove the Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs, Hajiya Amina HOD for allegedly assaulting one of their members while on duty at the Murtala Mohammed Hospital.

The Association condemned the alleged physical assault of the female doctor working at the hospital, demanding the immediate dismissal of the Commoner.

The incident occurred on November 1, 2024, at the Emergency Paediatric Unit of Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital, where the victim was said to be alone, attending to over 100 patients.

The NMA said, “We find it disturbing that an official entrusted with the welfare of the state’s citizens would be molested by the State Commissioner”.

“Such actions demonstrate a lack of empathy for healthcare professionals and a disregard for the systemic challenges facing the public health sector, including understaffing, resource shortages, and security concerns for medical staff.”

“The NMA calls for the immediate dismissal of the Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs, citing serious misconduct and a disturbing disregard for ethical standards.

”Enhanced Staffing and Resource Allocation: The NMA demands the implementation of the minimum benchmark for the number of doctors required to provide adequate service

However, the State Commissioner for Health explained that the matter has been taken care of and that already they have met with the MMA and their findings will soon be submitted to the Governor.
