The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) Ogun State branch has extended its ultimatum for the payment of the reviewed Consolidated Medical Salary Structure (CONMESS) by an additional 21 days.
This decision was made during an Emergency Ordinary General Meeting held on July 1, 2024, following the expiration of the initial 21-day ultimatum on June 27, 2024.
Dr. Olusina Ajidahun, the Acting Public Relations Officer of the NMA Ogun State branch, in a statement said that the extension aims to allow for further negotiations with the State government and to provide the government with more time to effect the payment of the revised CONMESS.
He further stated that the Congress of the NMA Ogun State branch emphasised the necessity of separating the reviewed CONMESS from the issue of the minimum wage.
He explained that doctors in Federal Health Institutions have been receiving the revised salary structure since June 2023.
According to him,the healthcare sector in Ogun State faces a significant challenge with the loss of its workforce to opportunities both within and outside the country.
He added that Emefforts by the government to recruit new doctors have been futile, as the candidates prefer positions in federal institutions due to better pay.
Recalled that the NMA Ogun State branch had issued a stern warning, stating that an indefinite strike will commence on July 23, 2024, if the government fails to show a concrete commitment to pay the reviewed CONMESS with the July 2024 salary.
He said “rising from its Emergency Ordinary General Meeting yesterday July 1, 2024 following the expiration of an initial 21 days ultimatum which lapsed on June 27, 2024, the Congress of the Nigerian Medical Association Ogun State branch, resolved to extend the initial 21 days ultimatum by another 21 days to allow for further negotiations with the Ogun state government and for the government to effect the payment.
“The congress also resolved that government should divorce the Reviewed CONMESS totally from the issue of the minimum wage as doctors in the Federal Health Institutions have been enjoying it since June 2023.
“The congress also resolved that an indefinite strike will commence on July 23, 2024 “if there is no concrete commitment from government to pay with July 2024 salary.”
