The Ogun State Command of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has joined its counterparts across the federation to commence a grassroots sensitisation programme on the recently validated National Migration Policy (NMP) 2025.
The exercise, which took place on Wednesday at the Command Headquarters in Abeokuta, was held in strict compliance with directives from the Service Headquarters to ensure all officers are abreast of evolving migration dynamics.
The session kicked off with a keynote address from the Comptroller General of Immigration (CGI), followed by opening remarks delivered on behalf of the Ogun State Comptroller. The programme underscored the critical need for institutional capacity building to meet modern security challenges.
In her keynote address, the CGI described the National Migration Policy (2025) as a “strategic roadmap” for the country. She noted that the framework is essential for enhancing migration governance, national security, and service delivery.
The CGI further highlighted that ongoing reforms and the integration of cutting-edge technological innovations are the primary drivers in aligning Nigeria’s migration management with global best practices.
The Ogun State Comptroller, Olufunke Yetunde Odusote, mnim, jp, who was represented at the event by Deputy Comptroller Kayode Adedigba, charged officers to take full advantage of the exercise.
Odusote urged the participants to internalize the technical knowledge shared, stressing that the effective application of the policy is key to strengthening operational efficiency within the gateway state.
“This is not just a lecture; it is a call to duty. Every officer must understand their role in the implementation of this policy to ensure our borders and migration processes remain robust,” she stated through her representative.
While delivering the technical presentation, the facilitator from the Service Headquarters, Assistant Comptroller Innocent Ologwu, provided a comprehensive breakdown of the document.
Ologwu traced the evolution of the National Migration Policy from its foundation in 2015 to the newly revised 2025 version. He pointed out significant improvements in the new document, including a more integrated implementation plan and a more inclusive approach to stakeholder engagement.
According to him, the 2025 policy seeks to bridge identified gaps in the previous version, ensuring a more coordinated and effective approach to migration management across Nigeria’s diverse landscapes.
The event featured a robust interactive session where officers sought clarifications on various “grey areas” within the policy document. Detailed insights were provided by the facilitator and the Command leadership, ensuring a unified understanding of the new provisions.
The programme concluded with a renewed commitment by the officers to uphold the principles of the NMP 2025 in their daily operations, followed by a commemorative group photograph.
